JEM

-Jewellery Ethically Minded-

JEM was born from the intent to invent a new kind of jeweller’s craft that would pair ethical awareness and commitment with simplicity and refinement. Pieces mixing radicality and simplicity, timeless enough that they may become objects that move through time at the same pace as our dreams. Pieces consistent enough to cross our paths and leave a mark. Ethical pieces, that protect us from the volatility of our desires. A certain part of ourselves is embodied in their seeming minimalism and their singular strength: simple, uncluttered, pure elegance, symbolic of our underlying values.

Fairmined gold

Fairmined Gold mining provides a rewarding labor environment, with decent working conditions and fair wages. The "human development" bonus – granted by partners of the Fairmined label – goes toward implementing and managing healthcare facilities, insurance, and education for children. This activity contributes to the growth of local economy, reduces poverty and corruption (money laundering, weapon funding) and helps to bring social appeasement in these countries. By giving craft miners access to export markets for their raw materials in fairer conditions, by strengthening their social status within their own countries (but also in the international trade market), Fairmined allows them to practice their craft with pride and dignity.

It is in France, in one of the most renowned jeweller’s workshops located in the heart of les Vosges, that our jewels take shape. The workshop is dedicated to excellence in jewellery-making, and is itself engaged in an innovative sustainable policy that uses its most beautiful craftsmanship to bring forth change and showcase one particular material: ethical Gold.

Each of our pieces is handmade according to traditional techniques: it is this irreplaceable human “savoir-faire”, perpetuated by exceptional craftsmen and passed on from master to disciple, that expresses itself in JEM’s creations. By partnering with the best French craftsmen, JEM helps to perpetuate a craft that is currently being threatened by the globalization of the industrial process and by relocation.

The lab-grown diamond

We are at the dawn of a new era, a new state of mind, a new, even brighter, more lucid, truer way of approaching luxury, shifting the way we look at it. In 2018, we are launching our first diamond, the JEM diamond. A diamond formed in a laboratory, respectful of people and nature and totally traced. A new, demanding diamond, which participates in the original movement of the House, that of advancing and progressing the world of jewellery towards what should be the true excellence and requirement with which luxury should be adorned today: responsibility, commitment, social and environmental progress.

Traceability

Since its creation, JEM Jewellery Ethically Minded has worked exclusively with partners committed to guaranteeing the material’s traceability, from the mine to the jewellery box. A collaborative and thorough process allows complete traceability of Fairmined Gold, at every step of the manufacturing process: refining, alloying and casting. This process guarantees that Fairmined gold benefits from a dedicated production chain and is never mixed with gold coming from a different source.

Historically opaque, fragmented and involving a confusing number of intermediaries, the jewellery industry must now rise to the crucial challenge of traceability, which is still too rare:
Traceability of the metals that are often melted in great quantities and in several steps, adding to the confusion over the origins of the material. Traceability of the stones, diamonds in particular which can go through more than ten intermediaries, from extraction through to the final shaping. Each JEM piece bears a serial number that allows it to be traced back to its origins.
